How Many Pieces Does a LEGO Mosaic Take?

With classic round 1×1 plates, a LEGO mosaic takes exactly one piece per stud: 4,096 for a 64×64 canvas. Switch to merged plates or tiles and the same picture can need a fraction of that. Here is how the numbers work, and how to bring them down.

Round plates: one piece per stud

The classic LEGO Art look puts one round 1×1 plate on every stud, so the plate count is simply width × height. On top of that you need the backing: interlocking 16×16 Technic panels, joined with two Technic pins along every seam.

Merged plates and tiles: far fewer pieces

Most pictures have runs of the same color: a background, a shirt, a block of sky. In the Plates and Tiles styles, bricksmosaic merges those neighboring studs into the largest pieces that fit, from 1×1 up to 2×6 plates or 1×6 tiles. It only uses sizes that are actually made in each color, and it never lets a piece cross from one 16×16 panel to the next, so every panel can still be built on its own.

How much you save depends on the picture. Logos, pixel art and flat artwork often drop by 80% or more: a simple 64×64 logo can go from 4,096 round plates to around 500 plates. Busy photos with fine dithering save less, typically a fifth, because neighboring studs rarely share a color.

Four ways to cut the count

1. Turn dithering off. Dithering scatters studs of different colors to fake in-between shades. Set it to “None” and colors form solid areas that merge into big plates.

2. Pick plates or tiles. Round plates are the classic look; plates keep the studs but merge areas; tiles give a smooth, modern surface with 1×N pieces.

3. Size down. Every step of 16 studs adds a whole row or column of panels. See which size suits which picture.

4. Simplify the image. A plain background and a tight crop leave fewer stray colors. More photo tips.
